Who Moved My Cheese?

The book “Who Moved My Cheese?” is about adapting to changes in life. It is written by Dr. Spencer Johnson which has influenced a lot of people around the world. The story is about two mice and two littlepeople living in a maze. In the maze they have cheese stations and cheese. The mice and littlepeople faced problems and they had to find new cheese. Although many people liked the book,  I find the story not quite interesting, but I find the lesson valuable and learned a lot from it.

After I finished reading the book I realized some things in my life. I realized that things are going to change and nothing is going to stay the same. Changes will always occur in our lives and nothing would be permanent. For me the lesson is really useful in my life. Even though I learned a lot from the book, the story wasn’t really that exciting.

The metaphors that the author used could be better (instead of using cheese, he could use something more interesting to read about). The story line and the things that happened were quite clear. I really wish that the story is a bit more interesting so that I could enjoy the book more. Most of the things in this book are metaphors. The maze that the mice and littlepeople are living in represents our life. Our life has dead ends and we have to find our way through it.  The cheese stations in the maze represent our comfort zones. The cheese represents something that we want most and posses.  Even the characters in this book have a meaning. There are four characters: Sniff and Scurry (the mice) and Hem and Haw (the littlepeople). Sniff symbolizes people who sniff changes in their lives. Scurry represents people who scurries into action and do something quickly. Hem and Haw represents the people that are stuck and unable to move on.

There are several lessons in this book that I can relate to my life. The first one is that change happens. In the book it is shown by the cheese that keeps on moving. In my life changes happen and I have to face them. The second lesson that I learned is that I should anticipate change. In the book it’s shown that we should smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old. I have to keep on checking the changes in my life and know when I have to move on and change.

After learning the lessons in this book I plan to change the way I live. I will anticipate change and be ready. I will not be afraid of the changes that are going to occur in my life and face them. I will also learn when I should move on, change and not stay in my comfort zone.

I would recommend this book for people who want to live their life in a better way. They can learn a lot of lessons from this book and make their life a better one. I would not recommend this book to people who are looking for interesting stories to read.

  1. Interesting review. I like what you said about the cheese and the stations being compared to things that surround us in life. I understand the part where you said you learned a lot from the book but didn't enjoy it because it happens to me all the time. We 'appreciate' some books but don't necessarily 'like' them. Might pick this one up soon. :)

  9. This review in my opinion is a bit more of a critique to the book. Even though this has included the main points and also the theme of this book, you seem to still lean on the edge where this book wasn't interesting. However, the critiques are great, you have shown the way it could have been more interesting. A reason to why you don't like this book is maybe because of the target audience, I do know you read books with a lot more weight in them and finds it boring to light read. This is a comment from me, your friend, not knowing what this is about, so thank you then, I hope you get your marks.

Which also shows that even though we might not clearly "love" a book, we can still learn from it's lessons that it has to share. I think this article deserves great marks :)

  47. I believe you have mostly tackled every little thing about the book. It should provide a good synopsis which may draw the attention of those who haven't heard about the book and would like to find out more. Just a simple addition: you mention that you don't really like the story and it should be more interestingly written. Perhaps as a reader of this blog I would love to know what would you suggest to the writer what could these 'interesting' elements could be, so in a way you also state your expectation upon reading this book. Otherwise, everything else is comprehensively done.

  48. The book seems like an interesting one. It's metaphorical and it's also applicable to our daily lives. One of the things that I find interesting is that how you were able to learn lessons from the book, even though the book talks about a completely different thing, which in this case, a story about the mice and the cheese. Looking forward to reading this book, great choice. And thanks for the review!

  49. Interesting reviews of the book, nessa! From your review, I've gotten a clear summary of the key insights of what the book is all about. You have clearly understood the important message that they want to convey: How to cope positively with the inevitable change that will occur in all aspects of your life. I think this book is too "heavy" for someone your age, but you managed to intepret their message well which I think it's great. I sincerely hope that you will remember this important message and apply it in your everyday life. Good Luck Vanessa!

  59. I like how you review the book! You did a great job on describing the metaphors in the book. It makes the new reader of the book understand it better and clearer. Nice work!

  60. If you do not like the cheese as the metaphor for something people aspire, what should be the appropriate representation then?

The moment I started reading the review, I knew right away that you were not impressed with the author's simplistic way of presenting the story. Sometimes, the simple ideas are the ones that tend to get overlooked and underestimated. Still, I would like to commend you for reading the book until the very end and attempting to understand the invaluable lessons in life imparted by the writer.
